Weapon Contraption Rig
An animator reached out to me and asked if I could have a couple of weapons look like it comes out from the backpack, circulating around the scout pilot and it goes back into her backpack.
I loved that idea and immediately said yes.
So here is my thought process on how I did this weapon contraption
- I need the weapons to spin in a group with a master control while allowing animators to scale and rotate the weapons individually.
- The animator wants separate controls for scale and rotate
I initially put out joints at the weapons, and towards the centre. It allowed the weapons to rotate, while the axes remain in the center. but I was not able to give it a scale constrain. I bumped into a couple of constrains issue one would not constrain because it has been constrained to another thing and it was a mess.
I asked a friend of mine, and we brainstormed and figure that we could do all this without using joints
So I scratched everything and restart
I decided to not use joints and just use controls and have it under a hierarchy
I created offset group and pivot at origin
I have the rotate CTRL pivot at the centre (where the main control is at)
I created a scale CTRL and pivot at the weapon
Freeze and delete history
then I select the scale CTRL, select geo, parent constrain with maintain offset on
and select scale ctrl, select geo,
I bring up node editor
and connect the scale of the scale CTRL to the scale of the geo.
and that is how I created the contraption
