For my capstone film (The Dead Sea), I modeled the Abyssal Plain Trenches using Zbrush. Carissa (Environment Concept Art) gave me a key note - which was to capture the 'mushroomy look' when modeling the background trenches. I went on to Zbrush and made a couple of mushroom variation shaped structure and then piece them all in together into a big environment.
The trenches would be huge too. It should have its own little 'system' and she gave me a quick sketch on how it looks like. With a little bit of imagination, I was able to come up with stacked mushroom looking trenches, while Katie modeled the leviathan skeleton.
